Twins: Portrait of an Artist?

This pencil drawing is an adaptation of a photograph of a famous artist.
Can you guess who?
I originally included other artists in the sketch, over working and spontaneous scribbles meant erasing the other figures. The combination of textures and smudges results in a mysterious scene. For example, the contrast of tones between the apparel, the face and the black tie.

Twins.

Everywhere I have been, you have been.
Every word I have said, you have said.
Twins of different wombs, different minds, different worlds, different times.
How come you know so much about my life?

Pain of a hero.

Granite slices of tomb

above sunken soldier of doom.

Who could foretell?

The grave of umpteen slain

in action at

Gavrelle April 1917.

Some shocked trees are gnarled

and barely stenciled upon

the evergreen awning

in the fingers of a petrified

Angel Gabriel.

The sheer low arc

of another winter sun

is bronzing the cask

of a wartime paragon.

Twilight bound

the the moon shall light

some letters

to shape an epitaph

to dream another night.

A birdsong soundtrack

is the theme of thy soul.

Captain of a short life.

No more wounds at Gavrelle.

Ring the bell.

I am the vigil

still here today.

I am the flowers

on your memorial causeway.

Projected along this sacred site

are the wings

from your shoulders

in the midst of flight.

Decorated by your country

beloved son.

The honour story

in motion

for what plight

for so long?

And the gates to this pasture

are closing at five.....

Static in this transient hill

I must leave.

I can tell.

May you rest in peace

along this line of rhyme.

Upon your heroic cry

we still dwell.

And the bell

echoes the bell.

Taken

with no sword to defend

pain of a hero.

Slain in action

India dreams skyscraper design.

India Temple. "A skyscraper design for the new millennium."

My designs are inspired by the Indian Tower which was intended to become India's first super-tall skyscraper.

Taking inspiration from the walkways and levels between floors, a plan view of the structure and the building profile which was designed by Fox & Fowle Architects.

My designs were created by marking out a box 16x16 cm. Dividing this into 4 squares.

I have used tonal shading to enhance the line drawings and the geometry of the architectural symbolism.

The architectural concept of the building included a stacked box type structure, each one rotated slightly. These were to include sky-garden levels, each tall enough to grow trees. This type of skewed box style is an emerging architectural form, however the construction of the building in Mumbai was cancelled and replaced by DB Towers.

This Tuesday there's an eclipse coming!

Yes, this Tuesday (010808) a SOLAR ECLIPSE is swinging it's way upon us.

The path of totality will commence in Arctic Canada and travel across Greenland, Russia, Siberia, Mongolia and conclude in China. Totality will be witnessed by many fortunate indigenous people living in it's shadow and many, many travellers from around the globe, who are placing their ambitions in the oh~so random cosmos. Luckily for us Northern Europeans, a partial eclipse of the Sun will be visible, weather permitting, or fingers crossed for a cloud break.

A SYZYGY - wow - what a fantabulous word.

(...the alignment of 3 or more celestial bodies in the same gravitational system along a straight line.) What a happening! RARE. If you are reading this now, after the event, what was it like for you? Were you really there?

Moon over Pylon.

The Moon at 09:47 hrs, captured setting over a line of Pylons.

Big Dipper in the Garden.

These images are created by placing Tea Lights in The Garden to represent the positions of stars and constellations. The Big Dipper is a group of the brightest stars of the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. There are seven stars in the group and Polaris, the North Star can be located by following a line from the two pointer stars, on the inside of the bowl. The Big Dipper swings around the North Star like the hands of a clock.

Orion's Belt in the Garden.

These images have been created by using Tea Lights to represent the positions of stars and constellations in the Garden. Orion's Belt, the three stars positioned in a line close together can be identified easily in the night sky. In the Northern Hemisphere, Orion is visible in the evening from November to April. Orion's sword can be seen clearly hanging from his belt.

Landscape configurations.

Landscape configurations tone texture and colour.

7 days / 7 landscapes / 7 mile radius

I have chosen to document the landscape surrounding the Calder and Spen Valley Greenway.

It is a sustainable transport route, set up and managed by Sustrans; a charitable organisation that builds cycle routes and works with communities.

I am using the formal elements of visual recording, as a ‘road map’ to further my journey through the landscape.

I found some index cards that join neatly to make a strip. I began by using line to record the landscape in panoramic. Then tone, texture and colour.

The panoramic form lends itself to length (distance from A to B) as an archive of the journey that was taken, whilst cycling to my observational points.

Plastic Bags.

Plastic bag
Tossed and rolling like witches knickers on spiral wind
The skin of something
Changing in turns
Higher skip and lower skim
Snared
Amidst echelon twigs in a skeletal tree
Shorn

This poem was written over 10 years ago and was inspired by a plastic bag, the associated image was taken by the Calder and Hebble Navigation in Ravensthorpe earlier this year.

Incidentally, the poem originally included the line; 'Like tumbleweed on spiral wind.' This was changed recently to, 'Witches knickers,' after descovering their Irish name. Further to this, they are known as the national flower in South Africa.
