Landscape configurations tone texture and colour.

7 days / 7 landscapes / 7 mile radius

I have chosen to document the landscape surrounding the Calder and Spen Valley Greenway.

It is a sustainable transport route, set up and managed by Sustrans; a charitable organisation that builds cycle routes and works with communities.

I am using the formal elements of visual recording, as a ‘road map’ to further my journey through the landscape.

I found some index cards that join neatly to make a strip. I began by using line to record the landscape in panoramic. Then tone, texture and colour.

The panoramic form lends itself to length (distance from A to B) as an archive of the journey that was taken, whilst cycling to my observational points.

This vibrant palm print was created by Nikola, she also penned the title, 'Kiss my art.'

Nikola also created another print using the colour green (above). There was some laughter and a delay in creating the second print, when Nikola realised that she had painted the wrong hand, thereby taking some time out to clean up and start over.

These images are captured using black out fabric and the pin hole projection method. I used black material to cover the windows and all light entry points. The studio has a good sunlight aspect, it travels across the space/wall in a reasonable curve. I made a small hole in the fabric near to the window and waited for the sun to arrive.
The best type of conditions are clear but part cloudy, hazy with cloud formations that roll in a moderate wind. This enables the projection to be more interesting than it would be on a cloudless day. Transforming, progressing, steady journey. I was surprised to see some vivid colours in the clouds and the sun.

Mark making with string.

Tie-dyeing.

A process of hand dyeing fabric,

in which sections are tightly bound, as with string,

to resist the dye solution,

thereby creating a variegated pattern.

Making decorative marks with string.

Tie the string tightly.

Use a variety of tying techniques.

Use dark dye over softer colours.

Rinse the fabric well to prevent colour bleeding.

Sew sqares of dyed fabric together.

Make a panel for a cushion.

Here is an image of The Screen as it looks part way through the collage process.

It is being decorated with colour prints and photographs of my artwork. I began collecting and building in November 2006. Nikola helped me join some of the cardboard and wood sections together with glue.

Paul's pointillism.

Pointillism: In painting, the use of separate dots of pure colour.

Most famously, examples of pointillism can be found in the work of Camille Pissarro and Georges Seurat.

This image is created by enhancing Tom's self portrait using the pointillism effect.

The Screen on video.

Please watch this 4 minute film of ‘The Screen’ I have created from recycled cardboard and wood.

Dimensions: Height 1.44m: Width 2.44m

The reverse is painted with wood stain, protecting the cardboard and is currently free of any decoration. The screen is made from found objects, decorated by photos and colour prints. It can also be folded together and will free stand in many positions.

It has been decorated on the first panel with images of the gates of Crow Nest Park. On a rare sunny day, I noticed that the shadows made by the gates were unusual and I decided to record them. It is a photo montage of the gate posts taken from left and right vantage points.

Two of the other panels are decorated with images from the local environment creating a sense of place around The Calder and Hebble Navigation. These pictures represent a spring day with no leaves on the trees, I have seen the same trees in summer and the plastic is hidden by foliage.

The 4th panel has an astronomical theme created by the appliqué of found objects on black fabric and pinhole projection photography. Local churches are featured in The Screen, St Thomas’ in Batley and St Mary’s in Mirfield, contrasted by the architectural grandeur of electricity pylons.

Watercolour window with reflections.

These images are created using watercolours and pencils.

First of all I selected and stretched some paper.

Then I used a mixture of blues from my paint box to create a watercolour wash.

I then applied salt to the paper to experiment with drawing the colour as it dried.

I found that this assisted with the variegation of the blue across the paper. Leaving behind a rough texture which was interesting to work on top of with the pencils.

I aim to further develop this technique and explore the theme of reflections and architectural windows.

Here's a photograph of my two paintings of St. Mary's church and the pylon. Summer 2011.
I guess you could call it a diptych.
I used household emulsion tester pots and therefore I was limited with my colour pallate.
