Tonal shading.

Pencil
image scanned from Sketchbook #92
I am not that pencil
straight and true
Or the picture
Shade and texture drew
And I am not the dropped one
...broken, brittle
It just flew from finger onto floor
Nor am I pack fresh and brand new
Not sharpened like a jewel
Or snapped in two
Or whittled and tossed away all together
I am the artist, spinning a yarn
in pencil
Text inspired by a poem called THE PENCIL by PAM PUSSYCAT

Rubbings of stone carvings in pencil.

Here is a collection of rubbings. Rubbings of stone carvings in pencil. I collected the images this morning, some of them came from St. John's. In this instance I have used a soft pencil (4B) .The images are created by placing paper over the symbol, motif or detail of choice and rubbing. I tended to rub back and forth in the same direction. Wax or chalk is just as effective. Then they were scanned, re sized and enhanced.
It's a continuation of the symbols, motifs and detail theme, below are designs including, oak leaf, circle and cross and a rolling scroll.

Gothic Symbolism.

This image is a repeat pattern of an earlier drawing.

Palm, eye, triangle, fingers, windows, temple, heart, bat.

Pencil and watercolour pencil.

I have explored an illusionist theme, where the fingers also double up as architectural features - windows in a temple.

Here I have duplicated my drawings to create a repeat pattern.

A symbol of the sacred feminine.

I created these images by scanning sections from my sketchbook, adding text.

I have used tonal shading and cross hatching in the background.

A rubbing, in pencil, of a stone carving.

A circle and a cross.

My variation of an inverted pentagram, or a five pointed pentacle?

I have used tonal shading to enhance the geometry of the shapes within.

A collection of works submitted for exhibition.

A pencil sketch. Crescent moon, pylon, bridge and St Mary's church. There's a lot going on in this one. Ceri says it looks like a cell.
This geometric drawing is based upon the architectural features of a building. India Tower (previously known as Park Hyatt Tower) is a supertall skyscraper under construction in Mumbai, Maharashtra and will be one of the tallest and greenest buildings in India once completed.
Two images culled from my Farnham Art College Sketchbook 1993.
The first image is titled, 'Shop & Bin' and is based upon an urban facade with street furniture. Collage. The second collage is titled, 'The Swimming Pool Library.' Inspired by a novel by Alan Hollinghurst. Collage. I did a lot of swimming at the time.
A pencil sketch of the spire. A preliminary study for another work. Finished? The architects name eludes me.
A geometric study of the WTC Twin Towers and surrounding architectural features. Namely the 'trident'.

Twins: Portrait of an Artist?

This pencil drawing is an adaptation of a photograph of a famous artist.
Can you guess who?
I originally included other artists in the sketch, over working and spontaneous scribbles meant erasing the other figures. The combination of textures and smudges results in a mysterious scene. For example, the contrast of tones between the apparel, the face and the black tie.
The black smudge on the the textile background.
The image sits well with the poem:-

Twins.
Everything I have done, you have done.
Everywhere I have been, you have been.
Every word I have said, you have said.
Twins of different wombs, different minds, different worlds, different times.
How come you know so much about my life?
Can anyone write the next line?

Milan Cathedral.

Drawn in pencil this is a copy of the original design of Caesar Caesariano (1521), based upon a series of evenly spaced concentric circles and a modulus of 12 and 7 units, the zodiac and the 7 (known) planets.

I used the modulus to recreate the illustration which I found in a book about geometry by Stephen Skinner.

'Milan Cathedral: The long drawn-out construction of the cathedral saw many changes and many new plans. During the rulership of the Duke Francesco Sforza several artists worked on the building, and both Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante were kept busy working out the proportions of the dome.'

India dreams skyscraper design.

-
India Temple. "A skyscraper design for the new millennium."

My designs are inspired by the Indian Tower which was intended to become India's first super-tall skyscraper.

My designs were created by marking out a box 16x16 cm. Dividing this into 4 squares.
I have used tonal shading to enhance the line drawings and the geometry of the architectural symbolism.
The architectural concept of the building included a stacked box type structure, each one rotated slightly. These were to include sky-garden levels, each tall enough to grow trees. This type of skewed box style is an emerging architectural form, however the construction of the building in Mumbai was cancelled and replaced by DB Towers.

Check out these links to view some more of my work in pencil.

Campsite phone box sketch.

Pencil sketch of a campsite phone box.

This sketch was completed over the course of 3 days, while we sat chatting to each other and the international visitors. The phone boxes are blue and they hang on sun bleached yellow walls, they became very popular in the evenings, usually the one on the right which still has a working internal light. I have tried to capture some of the animation around the scene and a sense of place. The sketch has become smudged through carriage.
